Red alert declared in the coasts of Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh and going by various weather bulletins Cyclone Thane is expected to cross the land near Puducherry at around 0700 am today [30th Dec 2011]  Some reports suggest that it would cross anytime between 0700 to 0900 am.

The very severe cyclonic storm  Thane  over southwest Bay of Bengal moved westward and lay at centered at 0230 hrs IST of today, the 30th December 2011 near latitude 11.80N and longitude 80.30E, about 50 km east of Puducherry and 125 km south of Chennai (Tamilnadu). The system is likely to move westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu coast close to south of Puducherry within a few hours.
Under the influence of this system, rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls (25cm or more) would occur over north Tamil Nadu & Puducherry during next 24 hours. Rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall would also occur over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalseema and isolated heavy rainfall would occur over south Tamil Nadu during the same period.

Gale winds speed reaching 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph is likely along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 12 hours.
Storm surge of about 1.0-1.5 meter height above the astronomical tide would inundate the low lying areas of Puducherry and Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram & Villupuram districts of north Tamil Nadu at the time of landfall.

Sea condition is phenomenal along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Fishermen along north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & south Andhra Pradesh coasts are advised not to venture into sea during next 24 hrs.

Even after landfall the system is likely to maintain its intensity for 12 hours and weaken gradually. Under its influence rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy fall is likely to continue over north Tamil Nadu and Pudducherry during next 24 hours after landfall causing inundation of low lying areas. Gale/squally wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph causing damage to thatched roofs and huts breaking of tree branches causing minor damage to power and communication lines over north Tamil Nadu and Pudducherry during 12 hours after the landfall. People are advised to remain indoor/safe place and cooperate with state Govt. officials and disaster management agencies.

Cyclonic storm ‘Thane’ has moved further toward the Chennai coast, lying about 500 km east-South east of the city.

Meteorological officials said it lay centred about 500 km east-south east of Chennai at 1600 hrs today and is likely to move in a west-north westward direction and cross between Cuddalore and Nellore on the morning of December 30.

“However, as the cyclonic storm will come further close to the coast after 24 hours, there is a probability of slight weakening before landfall,” they said.

While rainfall is likely in some areas of north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Dec 29, gale force winds with speeds of between 95-105 kmph and 120 kmph would prevail along and off these areas at the time of landfall, they said.

Since the sea would be “very rough,” fishermen have been advised to totally suspend suspend fishing operations.

Meanwhile, Chennai Corporation set up 15 special teams, equipped with portable motors to drain rain water and potable machines to cut trees and are in stand by mode, a corporation release said.

Two days after the Union Cabinet cleared Sonia Gandhi's flagship food security Bill, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has spoken out against the Bill.

She has written a letter to the Prime Minister accusing the Centre of encroaching into the domain of states and requesting that Tamil Nadu be kept out of the purview of the bill. She has said that popular welfare schemes are best left to the states.

"I would like to register my strong opposition to the Draft National Food Security Bill, 2011. On the contrary, I request the Union Government to not only continue to supply food grains to Tamil Nadu at the existing price and along the same pattern but also to restore the monthly allotment of kerosene," Jayalalithaa wrote in her letter.

"In a federal structure like ours where the States are in close and direct contact with the people, the choice of designing and implementing popular welfare schemes is best left to the States. The Union Government should not attempt or be seen to attempt encroaching into the domains of the States," she said.

"I, therefore, request that Tamil Nadu may be exempted from the purview of the Food Security Bill and my views as expressed above may be taken on record while deciding the matter," she added.

The Union Cabinet on December 18 cleared the Food Security Bill.

The Bill, which had the backing of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, will cover 63.5 per cent of the total population. I will cover 75 per cent of total rural population of which 46 per cent would be priority households. In urban areas of the 50 per cent of total population, 28 would be priority households.

The bill that proposes to make right to food a legal right, will provide subsidised foodgrain and guarantee rice at Rs 3 per kg, wheat at Rs 2 per kg and millet at Rs 1 per kg.

According to Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt, Google is planning to launch a tablet of the highest quality in the next six months; the thoughts were shared with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sea by Mr. Schmidt.

Honda launched the highly anticipated 2012 Honda City in New Delhi today. An additional variant named 'Corporate' has been added along with the other existing E, S and V models with a price tag of Rs 6.99 lakh. The E variant is priced at Rs 7.70 lakh, the S variant is priced at Rs 8.20, the V-MT variant is priced at Rs 8.70 lakh and the V-AT variant is priced at Rs 9.42 lakh. A first in its class, an electric sun-roof has been installed in the V variant which will bump up the price tag for the V MT to Rs 9.50 lakh and the V AT to Rs. 10.22 lakh. (All prices ex-showroom, Delhi.) Bookings for the new City will commence immediately at all the Honda dealerships nationwide and deliveries will begin in January 2012.

Newly-designed 10-spoke alloy wheels the look similar to the Accord's wheels are present on the car. The turn indicators have been housed in the outside rear view mirrors. The sixth generation City will house a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder VTEC petrol engine with power output of 118.4PS@6600 rpm and max torque of 145Nm@4800 rpm. The engine will be mated to either a 5-speed  manual or automatic transmission with Grade Logic Control and torque converter. The average fuel economy is reported to be 16.8kmpl. It will come equipped with an electrical power steering, ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The ground clearance has also been increased to 165mm from 160mm.  

The new City will be available in two new color options, the Carnelian Red Pearl and the Sparkling Brown Metallic along with the four existing color options of Urban Titanium Metallic, Bold Beige Metallic, Alabaster Silver Metallic and Taffeta White.

After striking a chord with the Broadway musical for its latest offering, the ‘Vodafone 555 Blue’, a Facebook dedicated handset, Vodafone has captured the campaign outdoors to accentuate the ongoing communication promotion. To reach the intended message to its core target audience, Vodafone has collaborated with its OOH partner, Bates Landscape to roll out a nationwide campaign.

The OOH campaign executed by Bates Landscape is conceptualised to bring forth the product offering aimed at its core target audience, viz 16- 25 year olds with a high social and mobile commitment. The campaign is geared towards today’s youth who perceive Facebook as the basis of communication, yet have a limited budget. The outdoor campaign spread over a month has been currently rolled out in 13 cities ranging from Shillong in the North-east, to parts of Western UP and select metros.

Here comes one more song titled 'Pethana Senjana' which is spreading around the internet as the second song of Dhanush's '3'. With still Kolaveri song leading the records, will Pethana Senjana overtake it.

When contacted Aishwarya R Dhanush regarding this Second song which got leaked around the internet. She asked us the title of the song, when we said Pethana Sejana. She started bursting out in laughter saying 'if there is a song like this from my movie '3' then please let me know it first'.

She said it's really cool to see how the Kolaveri song has reached and made a mark for my debut film '3'. Now its funny to see a song titled 'Pethana Senjana' is doing the rounds claiming it to be from '3'. I think we got free promotions done for our film she giggles.

According to the Hindu mythology, eating during the eclipse is supposed to be unholy and is forbidden. This concept has stayed with us right from the ancient times. According to our religion, during the solar eclipse eating anything is forbidden because of the fact that the bacteria in the food multiply at a fast pace. Food articles and water is unpurified by active bacteria’s during the eclipse.

The scientific reason behind all of this is that during the eclipse the digestion system of a person weakens, because of which if food is consumed during that tenure, it could possibly cause some digestion and pathological problems.

According to the Hindu dharma, ten hours prior to the lunar eclipse, the effects starts showing. Also, a custom ofprayers and chanting has been made before the consumption of food during this time.
