"Amália"(2008) was a great surprise for me when I went to see it, for so many reasons... This movie tells the story of Amália Rodrigues, probably the most international Portuguese (fado)singer ever. There are a lot of short films and TV shows about her artistic career but there was no film about her personal life, and this is the first about it. The whole movie is great, the script is very well written, the colors in the movie are well chosen and it was shot on 35mm film, which gave it a luster that it wouldn't have if it was shot on video. Actress Sandra Barata Belo was a (great) surprise, she had speech lessons so she could talk like Amália, and I was surprised with director Carlos Coelho Silva, because this movie is very well directed. This is not our best film, but it is one of the best, for sure.I gave it 8 out of 10,because it surprised me a lot, it was one of the best Portuguese films I saw. It worths a view.
