Iran has imposed restriction on the celebration of Valentine’s Day in the country with a ban order on the gifts and its promotion to prevent the spread of western culture.

Shops in Iran were banned from selling Valentine cards and gifts as the traditional lovers' day gains increasing popularity in the Islamic republic, the ILNA news agency reported.

However, the Valentine's Day that falls on February 14, is not banned officially, but the hardliners have warned not to celebrate the day. As per Islamic law, unmarried couples are not allowed to make get attached physically.

The Iran government has banned the products that are meant for the celebration of the day such as posters, brochures, advertising cards, gifts, boxes that contain symbols of hearts and red roses. Regarding the celebration of love, Union Minister Ali Nikou Sokhan said that Iran is known for its ancient civilization and culture. It has also various days to honour kindness, love and affection.

The minister said that there is no need to celebrate or follow foreign culture as his country is rich in culture and tradition. Opposing the Valentine's Day, he said that celebrating that day is to honour western culture that is destructive to the country.

As Valentine's Day is increasingly popular among youth and brings more profits for the businessmen in the country, such restriction in the name of Islam cannot be acceptable to most of the people.

Meanwhile, some statesmen have suggested to celebrate “Mehregan,” an Iranian festival, instead of Valentine's day. The festival signifies friendship, affection and love.
