Do not ignore the existence of infrared light on the card Automated Teller Machine (ATM) owned by you. This is because in Washington DC, United States, the hacker can recognize the PIN number from the ATM using a digital infrared camera. Thus is the discovery of the researchers of San Diego, recently.
At the seminar USENIX Workshop on Offensive Technologies earlier this month, researchers from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), has explained how the digital infrared camera to detect ATM pin. The researchers demonstrated the heat at our fingertips is actually lagging on the ATM keypad. Then when the camera is used immediately after the transaction, digit PIN can be detected 80 percent accuracy. Even after one minute, researchers can still identify the figure with the truth about 50 percent.
Plastics and rubber on the ATM machine is the main material that retains heat from the fingertips. However, both these materials are not 100 percent correctly detect your PIN. “With plastic keypads, we could detect keypresses, but it is actually difficult to determine the order,” said one researcher.
The solution, be careful using ATM machines in public places. Make sure you repeat the insert pin with random digits before leaving the ATM machine.
