Defending champion Pankaj Advani notched up India’s first gold medal in men’s Billiards singles in the Asian Games at Guangzhou, China. He defeated Oo Nay Thway Oo of Myanmar 3-2. Earlier, Indian women shooters Heena Sidhu, Annu Raj Singh and Sonia Rai opened their account by winning the silver medal in the 10 meter Air Pistol team event at Guangzhou, China today. Indian men’s tennis team today beat Thailand in the quarter finals in the Asian Games. Fourth seeds India won the tie against seventh seed Thailand after Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh won their respective singles rubbers to take on a 2-0 lead. Unranked Sanam thrashed 546th ranked Kittipong Wachiramanowong 6-1 6-4 in the first singles match and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Somdev clinched the issue for India defeating 464-ranked Danai Udomchoke 7-5 7-5. India will clash with top seeds Chinese Taipei in the semi finals.

India’s campaign in weightlifting began on a disastrous note as three lifters in the fray, who had bagged medals in the Commonwealth Games performed below par and crashed out.

In Chess, K Sasikiran, Suraya Sekhar Ganguly, D Harika and Tanya Sachdev won their respective opening games of the league. India are expected to secure some medals in the chess events. India is now placed at fourth position in the medal’s tally with one Gold, Three Silver and a Bronze. China leads the tally with 22 golds, followed by South Korea at 9 gold and Japan with 5 yellow metals.
