Makara Sankranti is celebrated in Kerala at Sabarimala where the Makara Jyothi is visible followed by the Makara Vilakku celebrations.

Makara Sankranti is the day when the Sun God begins its ascendancy and entry into the Northern Hemisphere.It occurs every January is an auspicious day for Hindus. It is also a special time for devotees of Lord Ayyappa who undertake the pilgrimage to Sabari hills where they offer prayers and converge to witness a spectacle called Makara Jyoti or heavenly light.

The temple and the base camp Pampa are overflowing with devotees since the last few days, making it a challenge for police to manage the crowd. The pooja will be conducted at 6:44 pm followed by darshan of the ‘Makarajyoti', a flicker of light across the eastern horizon, which is considered as a divine phenomenon.

Makara Samkramam is the time when the sun moves from ‘dhanu rasi' (Sagittarius zodiac sign) to ‘Makaram rasi' (Capricorn).

Pilgrims have been camping at atop the hill in makeshift tents and shacks, with devotees from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka forming a major chunk of them.
