A rare deadly virus named 'Congo' has killed at least three people including a woman in Gujarat. The Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) has confirmed country's first case from Sanand.
The deadly fever was identified as Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) and a woman named as Amina Momin was the first victim of the virus on January 3. Later the doctor who was treating her Dr Gagan Senke of Shalby Hospital in Ahmedabad died on January 13 and the nurse attending to Amina was the last victim of the fever.
The NIV today said that the deaths were caused by the CCHF or 'Congo fever'. A team of NIV has collected 50 samples from the area and the state government has warned of the possible attack as the virus is highly infectious and immediate precautions to be taken soon.
Officials said that two more people have been admitted to hospital. The virus is transmitted by ticks and animals to humans and causes bleeding from skin, mouth and nose.
