In the battle between the TV year’s two biggest spectacles, the Super Bowl and the Oscars, the Oscars have blinked.
Despite recent talk of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences moving the Oscar ceremony up to late January, where it might conflict with the annual pro football championship, the group announced Wednesday that it has tabled that idea, and that, for the next couple of years at least, the Academy Awards will continue to air in late February.
“The Academy’s Board of Governors has determined that the date of the 84th Academy Awards in 2012 will not be significantly earlier than the now-traditional last Sunday in February,” the Academy said in a statement. “A different date still remains a possibility in subsequent years, and the Academy’s staff and Board will continue to evaluate the advantages and challenges associated with such a change.”
The Academy had spent much of the last four months mulling the idea of an earlier ceremony, one that wouldn’t be upstaged by the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and other trophy-fests that have stolen Oscar’s thunder in recent years. Such a move would also shorten the often nasty campaigning season. Then again, a shortened award season might not give Academy members enough time to watch all the eligible movies. (Same with viewers at home, who are more likely to watch the Oscar show if they’ve had time to develop a rooting interest in the nominees.)
But the main problem with a January ceremony would be a potential clash with the NFL, especially given the recent idea floated by the league of making the season two games longer. If that happened, a traditional Sunday night Oscarcast could get tackled by playoff contests or even the big game itself. The alternative would be to move the show back to March or to Monday nights, both of which could hurt ratings.
The Academy is already committed to a February 27 date for the 2011 ceremony. As for having an earlier show in 2012 and beyond, The Hollywood Reporter quotes an informed source as saying, “The Academy’s not ready yet. ABC is not prepared to sell an earlier awards show.”
Most of all, the source says, the Academy isn’t ready to institute the kind of secure online voting system that might be necessary to make such an early vote possible. For now, it’ll all still be done via the U.S. Postal Service.

ReplyDeleteThe Oscar 2011 awarding starts at 8PM ET and it will be airing live on ABC only. For the prediction in the upcoming Oscar awards, The Social Network , Natalie Portman and James Franco could be the big winner on this event.
