The Meteorological Agency issued a warning Sunday, which stated that the Shinmoedake volcano, located in Japan, has resumed activity after a couple of quiet weeks

A volcano in southwestern Japan erupted Sunday after nearly two weeks of relative silence, sending ash and rocks up to four kilometres (two and a half miles) into the air, a local official says.

The 1,421-metre (4,689-feet) Shinmoedake volcano in the Kirishima range saw its first major eruption for 52 years in January

Shinmoedake, which is one of several volcanic peaks in the Kirishima mountain range is one of several volacanos in the area about 960 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter. It is not known if the earthquake, which was so strong that it reportedly shifted the earth’s axis, also caused the volcanic eruption. The volcano, which had also erupted in January after 52 years of quiet, has reportedly been building up lava in recent weeks. It is not yet known if further eruptions van be expected.
